To say that 2020 has been a challenging year is an understatement! As the Covid crisis swept through BC early this spring, the fate of the 2020 camping season was of major concern for outdoor enthusiasts across the province. But thanks to the diligent efforts of frontline workers and community members, British Columbia’s parks, campgrounds and beaches are now back in business!

Here at Hub City RV, we’ve been busy helping folks from across Vancouver Island and even the Lower Mainland find the perfect trailer, camper, motorhome or boat so that they can (safely!) enjoy the great outdoors this summer. Here’s what you need to know about RV camping in British Columbia in the wake of the 2020 global pandemic.

RV Camping Offers Safe Travel Alternatives

With options for airline travel still being limited, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of families and couples who are using RV camping as their means for vacation time. It’s been an exciting time for us to be spreading our love of the RV lifestyle with so many folks from across Vancouver Island! Due to the nature of RV camping, it’s relatively easy to maintain social distancing measures while you take a much needed break from your day-to-day to soak up the beauty of the Sunshine Coast. Here are a few of our top tips when it comes to picking the perfect RV for your first (or tenth!) camping adventure:

• Consider purchasing (or upgrading to) a trailer that offers ample space for everyone onboard. Many of our units have more than enough space for family members to still practice good distancing measures within the RV, plus everyone will feel more at ease knowing that they’ve got a dedicated space to themselves.

• Find out what your vehicle can tow (you can quickly look up the towing capacity for your vehicle online) to help you narrow down which campers you can safely haul. If you don’t have a vehicle that’s capable of towing a trailer, we highly recommend browsing our inventory of Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes!

• Don’t skimp on accessories! When you pull up to your campsite, things like comfortable outdoor seating, an awning, games and puzzles for the family, lighting, a well-stocked pantry and cozy bedding can help turn your camping trip into a luxurious getaway.

Speaking of accessories, don’t forget to check out our inventory of used boats for the ultimate Vancouver Island camping experience!

Rules and Regulations for BC Camping in 2020

The Nitty Gritty: What we Know About the Rules and Regulations for BC Camping in 2020

The majority of BC campgrounds across the Mainland and Vancouver Island officially reopened on June 1st. There was an initial flurry of folks trying to book campgrounds in the first few days, but now that the excitement has died down there are still plenty of amazing sites that can be booked throughout July, August and September. You can reserve a site online through Discover Camping, and look up park-specific information through the official BC Parks website. As we all adapt to our new normal in a post-pandemic summer, a few things to keep in mind include:

•  Folks are being highly encouraged to stay local. The majority of popular Vancouver Island campgrounds are only being frequented by folks who live on the Island. Non-BC residents are not permitted to camp in BC parks this summer.

•  Campgrounds are open, but some shared facilities remain closed. It’s highly encouraged to find ways to travel in a fully self-sufficient unit - meaning you have freshwater, shower, food preparation, bathroom and waste storage/disposal facilities onboard your unit. If you have questions about how to ensure your RV is self-sufficient, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Hub City RV experts!

•  Be mindful of safety measures while you camp and travel: be diligent about your hygiene, keep a safe distance from other campers, be respectful of BC towns that you pass through for supplies and keep your campsite clean.
